Summary
A June 2026 Nature Photonics paper reports a proof-of-concept from the EU NEoteRIC project, led by the University of Valencia and involving CEA-Leti, Swiss startup Lumiphase, Western Athens University, and Iberian firm iPronics, to move AI-heavy computations from electronics to integrated silicon photonics. The team fabricated a processor using barium titanate (BTO), a ferroelectric material that maintains its state with voltage rather than current, cutting power to 560 nanowatts per phase shift—3 to 4 orders of magnitude lower than existing thermo-optic approaches. While the work targets lower-energy data-center and AI matrix operations, CEA-Leti notes that scalable industrial adoption will depend on identifying compelling real-world use cases; it is continuing via EU projects Prometheus and Neuropuls to add more functions such as laser sources.

Published in June 2026 in *Nature Photonics*, this result comes from the European NEoteRIC project, led by the University of Valencia in Spain with contributions from Swiss startup Lumiphase, the University of West Attica in Athens, the Iberian company iPronics and CEA-Leti.

The work addresses a central problem for AI infrastructure: data centers must move ever larger volumes of data, pushing the limits of bandwidth and energy consumption in conventional electronics. One alternative is silicon photonics, a field explored at CEA-Leti for more than 20 years, which carries information as light in miniaturized circuits. By replacing electrons with photons, it enables higher data rates with lower energy use. The same principle can also be used for computation, replacing transistors with optical functions.

NEoteRIC set out to demonstrate this approach for AI-relevant processing, notably vector-matrix multiplication, a core operation in machine learning. The project’s proof of concept was the fabrication of a processor integrating a key ferroelectric material, barium titanate (BTO). Its advantage is that, unlike previous solutions, it does not need current to maintain its state, only voltage. That brings power consumption down to 560 nanowatts per phase shift — three to four orders of magnitude below existing thermo-optic solutions, which typically require 1 to 10 milliwatts for the same function.

CEA-Leti’s role was to provide its silicon photonics platform to integrate this still-uncommon industrial material. Its teams began fabricating the circuit before Lumiphase, which developed the BTO-based solution, completed the process. The collaboration was made possible by CEA-Leti’s ability to both test new processes and manufacture at industrial scale. According to Éléonore Hardy, who leads silicon photonics partnerships at CEA-Leti, the result removes a major doubt about the approach.

The main challenge now is not the technical demonstration but adoption: while the target applications are AI computing and lower-energy data centers, the industry still needs compelling use cases to justify deploying this emerging form of photonic neuromorphic computing. In the meantime, CEA-Leti is continuing work through the European Prometheus and Neuropuls projects, which aim to add more functions to the same platform, including laser sources.
