BlaBlaCar is discontinuing its long-distance bus service in France, marking a strategic retreat from a capital-intensive segment to refocus on its core carpooling and online travel agency businesses. The service, launched in 2019, will cease operations on June 26, 2024.
The decision follows a comprehensive review, with the company concluding that the bus segment required a level of investment incompatible with its ambition to achieve profitability. BlaBlaCar will now concentrate resources on its two primary and profitable activities: its historic carpooling platform and BlaBlaCar Daily for regular commutes, alongside its online travel agency (BlaBlaCar Bus was previously integrated into this unit). The company assures that all affected customers with bookings beyond the shutdown date will be contacted for full refunds.
This move underscores a broader trend of consolidation and strategic realignment within the competitive European intercity transport market. It highlights the operational and financial challenges of running a physical fleet compared to asset-light platform models. For BlaBlaCar, shedding the bus service allows for a sharper focus on scalable, technology-driven mobility and travel services as it pursues sustainable growth.
