Sony is accelerating a two-pronged partnership strategy around image sensors and industrial AI vision. The Japanese group has signed a definitive, binding agreement with TSMC this summer to mass-produce next-generation image sensors starting in 2029, while also teaming up with Mitsubishi Electric to develop AI-based vision solutions for manufacturing.
On the sensor side, the deal involves Sony Semiconductor Solutions and the Taiwanese foundry TSMC, which will create Advanced Vision technologies aimed at future imaging applications. The agreement marks a significant step toward industrial-scale production of a new generation of sensors, with the first output targeted for 2029.
In parallel, Sony is extending its expertise beyond consumer imaging into factory automation and industrial inspection through its collaboration with Mitsubishi Electric. The two companies plan to build AI vision systems designed for manufacturing environments, where machine vision can improve quality control, detection, and operational efficiency.
Together, these alliances underscore Sony’s effort to reinforce its position in image sensing while broadening its reach into high-value industrial applications, combining semiconductor manufacturing capacity with AI-driven vision technologies.
