An unprecedented wildfire that burned for more than two weeks through the forests of the Justin massif has already begun to weigh on the Diois area’s economy, with early damage visible in forestry, tourism and viticulture. The Drôme department, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region and the French state have pledged nearly €4 million in aid to help the territory recover.
The fire’s economic fallout is expected to extend beyond the immediate destruction of woodland, affecting local businesses and activities tied to the landscape and summer season. Forestry is the first sector to be hit directly, but tourism and wine production are also feeling the consequences, as the blaze has altered the appeal and use of the area.
Public authorities have moved quickly to announce support, with the combined package from the department, region and state amounting to almost €4 million. The funding is intended to address the most urgent needs after one of the most severe fires ever recorded in the area.
