Seqens, which is preparing to supply a 100% French active ingredient for paracetamol, says the project is being weighed down by a difficult combination of geopolitical tensions, foreign competition and downward pressure on purchase prices. The company, a major manufacturer of the painkiller’s active substance, points in particular to the crisis in the Middle East as one of the factors increasing uncertainty for the sector.

The project has already required more than €100 million in investment, underscoring the scale of the commitment at a time when the economics of paracetamol production are becoming more fragile. According to the article, manufacturers are also facing renegotiation of purchase tariffs at lower levels, adding further strain to an industry already exposed to international competition.
