Cailabs, the Rennes-based company specializing in optical communications, has developed its first transportable military optical ground station in partnership with the U.S. firm Gilat DataPath. The system is designed for bidirectional links at 10 Gbit/s with LEO satellites, marking a step toward deployable, high-throughput optical satellite communications for defense use.
The station has already been demonstrated in France, and the companies are now considering an initial production run of 12 units in 2027. Assembly could potentially take place in the United States, depending on how the program is structured.
The project highlights Cailabs’ move from optical technology development into operational military applications, while also reflecting growing interest in transportable ground infrastructure capable of supporting low-Earth-orbit satellite networks.
