SK hynix is in talks with Intel over a possible deal to manufacture memory chips at Intel’s factory in Ohio, according to Reuters. If confirmed, the arrangement would mark a first for the South Korean chipmaker in the United States, but it could also face resistance from Seoul.
The discussions come as SK hynix explores ways to expand its manufacturing footprint beyond South Korea. Producing memory chips in Intel’s Ohio plant would give the company a U.S.-based production option at a time when semiconductor supply chains are under increasing geopolitical and industrial pressure.
The move would also be significant for Intel, whose Ohio site has been positioned as part of its broader U.S. manufacturing push. For SK hynix, however, any such agreement may prove politically sensitive at home, with South Korean authorities potentially opposing a transfer of advanced production activity abroad.
Reuters said the talks are ongoing, and no final agreement has been announced.
