Summary
Prof. Chika Otani of the University of Tokyo will deliver a SPINTEC seminar on Oct. 6 at 14:00 titled “Exploring Quantum Spintronics – Research and Internship Opportunities in Japan,” covering the Japan–France ASPIRE Q-Spintronics Project and its goals to build international spintronics collaborations. The talk will review key research themes (spin/orbital angular momentum transport and magnon–phonon interactions) and highlight participating Japanese institutions including Tohoku University, the University of Tokyo, Osaka University, and JAEA, along with available experimental techniques. It also outlines opportunities for master’s/PhD students and young researchers to pursue internships or research stays in Japan with potential financial support.

On October 6 at 14:00, Prof. Chika Otani of the University of Tokyo, invited by SPINTEC, will give a seminar titled “Exploring Quantum Spintronics -Research and Internship Opportunities in Japan” at IRIG/SPINTEC, auditorium 445, CEA Building 10.05 in Grenoble. In-person access to the CEA conference room requires prior entry authorization, which must be requested before September 28 at admin.spintec@cea.fr. A video-conference link will be provided later.

The seminar will present the Japan–France ASPIRE Q-Spintronics Project, an international program linking researchers and students from leading laboratories in Japan and France. Its aim is both scientific and educational: to advance spintronics research while creating opportunities for young researchers to work across borders, learn new experimental methods, and build international networks.

Prof. Otani will begin with an accessible overview of the science behind the project, including spin and orbital angular momentum transport and the interactions between magnons and phonons. These fast-moving research areas address how angular momentum and information can be generated, transported, and controlled in nanoscale materials and devices.

He will then introduce the Japanese laboratories involved in the collaboration: Tohoku University, the University of Tokyo, Osaka University, and JAEA. Each offers different research settings and techniques, with possible student participation in nanofabrication, electrical transport, magneto-optical measurements, synchrotron experiments, high-frequency measurements, and magnetization dynamics studies.

The final part of the seminar will explain how Master’s and PhD students, as well as young researchers, can take part in internships or research stays in Japan through ASPIRE, including the kinds of research topics available and the financial support on offer. The event is aimed both at people already working in spintronics and at those simply interested in pursuing research opportunities in Japan.

Abstract : Would you like to experience research in Japan and become part of an international collaboration in spintronics?

In this seminar, I will introduce the Japan–France ASPIRE Q-Spintronics Project, an international program that brings together researchers and students from leading laboratories in Japan and France. Our goal is not only to explore new frontiers of spintronics, but also to create opportunities for young researchers to cross borders, learn new experimental techniques, and develop their own international research networks.

I will first give an accessible introduction to some of the science we are exploring—from spin and orbital angular momentum transport to interactions between magnons and phonons. These rapidly developing areas raise fundamental questions about how angular momentum and information can be generated, transported, and controlled in nanoscale materials and devices.

I will then introduce the participating Japanese laboratories at Tohoku University, the University of Tokyo, Osaka University, and JAEA, highlighting the different research environments and experimental techniques available at each location. Students may have opportunities to participate in nanofabrication, electrical transport, magneto-optical measurements, synchrotron experiments, high-frequency measurements, and studies of magnetization dynamics.

Finally, I will explain how Master’s and PhD students, as well as young researchers, can visit Japan for internships or research stays through the ASPIRE collaboration, including possible research topics and financial support. Whether you already work in spintronics or are simply curious about doing research in Japan, this seminar will provide an introduction to the scientific and international opportunities offered by Q-Spintronics.
