Clinatec has hailed a major international distinction for its co-founder, Professor Emeritus Alim-Louis Benabid, who has been honored by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) for his lifetime scientific and medical work. The award recognizes a career that has profoundly changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of patients and, beyond that, a pioneering vision that continues to shape Clinatec’s mission.

Benabid, who invented deep brain stimulation (DBS) with Professor Pollak, helped transform the treatment of neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s disease. His work opened the way to new therapeutic approaches that Clinatec says it now embodies. The organization stressed that his contribution was not only a major scientific breakthrough, but also a model of how fundamental research, technological innovation and clinical practice can be brought together to meet patients’ needs.

That interdisciplinary approach — built on dialogue between fields and on moving discoveries from the lab into the clinic — remains, in Clinatec’s words, the institution’s “DNA.” The Fonds Clinatec said it is especially proud to see Benabid recognized in this way, noting that he helped lay the foundations of its patient-focused, impact-driven research. The award is also seen as a tribute to his scientific legacy and to the collective momentum he helped create for the benefit of current patients and future generations.
