Thales has secured approval from France's CB payment network to deploy biometric payment cards nationwide, marking a significant step for contactless transactions. The cards feature an embedded fingerprint sensor, allowing users to authenticate payments by touch without needing a PIN for transactions under the €50 contactless limit.
This innovation enhances security by directly linking authorization to the cardholder's biometric data, reducing fraud risks associated with lost or stolen cards. Notably, the system requires no changes to existing payment terminals, facilitating rapid adoption. Thales highlights that the design also improves accessibility, particularly for visually impaired users, by providing tactile feedback and eliminating the need to locate and enter a PIN.
The approval follows extensive testing and aligns with broader European trends toward biometric payment solutions. Thales aims to roll out the cards through French banks in the coming months, positioning the technology as a seamless upgrade to current contactless offerings.
