Akamai Technologies has signed an agreement to acquire LayerX, a startup whose browser-based security technology is designed to monitor and control what happens inside the browser when employees use generative AI applications, SaaS tools, or AI agents.

The deal is valued at about $205 million, subject to customary adjustments, and Akamai expects to close it in the third quarter of 2026.

The acquisition addresses a specific gap: companies are rolling out AI tools at scale, but their security controls are not keeping up. Existing defenses often cannot see how employees are using these tools or what data is being sent to large language models. “Their current systems do not allow them to understand how employees interact with AI tools or how they share data with large language models,” said Mani Sundaram, who leads Akamai’s security business.

LayerX’s pitch is to turn the browser into a new security perimeter. Its platform provides real-time visibility and control over prompts sent, files downloaded, and SaaS interactions, without requiring changes to the existing infrastructure. It also stands out for working with mainstream browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, whereas enterprise browser security products often force users onto a separate browser. LayerX is also compatible with so-called “agentic” browsers such as Atlas and Comet.

LayerX will be folded into Akamai’s Zero Trust division, where it will complement existing offerings including ZTNA network access, AI application protection, and workload segmentation. The startup’s cofounders, Or Eshed and David Vaisbrud, will join Akamai as part of the integration.

This will be Akamai’s fourth acquisition in the Israeli cybersecurity ecosystem over the past five years. LayerX is expected to reach roughly $10 million in annual recurring revenue by the end of 2026.

L’enjeu est relativement précis. Les entreprises déploient des outils d’IA à grande échelle, mais leurs dispositifs de sécurité ne suivent pas. Ils ne permettent pas de voir comment les collaborateurs utilisent ces outils, ni quelles données partent vers les modèles de langage.

« Leurs dispositifs actuels ne leur permettent pas de comprendre comment les employés interagissent avec les outils d’IA ni comment ils partagent des données avec les grands modèles de langage », résume Mani Sundaram, en charge du pôle sécurité chez Akamai.

Le navigateur comme nouveau périmètre de sécurité

LayerX offre une visibilité et un contrôle en temps réel sur ces usages : prompts envoyés, fichiers téléchargés, interactions SaaS. La solution ne modifie pas l’infrastructure existante. Elle se distingue aussi par sa compatibilité avec les navigateurs grand public ( Chrome, Firefox, Edge) là où les solutions d’entreprise obligent les utilisateurs à changer d’outil. Elle fonctionne également avec les navigateurs dits « agentiques » comme Atlas ou Comet.

LayerX rejoindra la division Zero Trust d’Akamai. Elle viendra compléter des solutions existantes : accès réseau ZTNA, protection des applications d’IA et segmentation des charges de travail.

Les deux cofondateurs, Or Eshed et David Vaisbrud, intégreront l’organisation d’Akamai. C’est la quatrième acquisition du groupe dans l’écosystème cybersécurité israélien en cinq ans. LayerX devrait afficher un revenu récurrent annuel d’environ 10 millions $ fin 2026.
