Standing Ovation Secures €25 Million from Danone to Scale Animal-Free Dairy
French biotech startup Standing Ovation has raised €25 million in a Series A funding round led by Danone’s corporate venture arm, Danone Manifesto Ventures. The investment will accelerate the industrial-scale production of its animal-free dairy proteins, specifically caseins, using precision fermentation.
Founded in 2021, Standing Ovation has developed a proprietary process to produce caseins—the key functional proteins in cheese—by fermenting microorganisms. This technology aims to replicate traditional dairy’s taste, texture, and meltability without involving cows, targeting the growing market for sustainable and lactose-free alternatives.
The fresh capital will primarily fund the construction of a pilot production plant in the Paris region. This facility is designed to demonstrate the company’s process at a pre-industrial scale, a critical step toward future commercial manufacturing and partnerships with food brands.
Danone’s strategic involvement signals strong industry interest in precision fermentation as a route to decarbonize dairy. Standing Ovation’s CEO highlighted the partnership as validation of their technology’s potential to meet demand for sustainable ingredients without compromising on quality.
The startup, which had previously raised €12 million, is part of a competitive global sector developing animal-free dairy and egg proteins. This funding round positions it to advance from R&D to production, aiming to supply B2B ingredients for cheese and other dairy product alternatives.
