The Clinatec Fund has appointed Professor Corrado Cali as its new Scientific Officer. An associate professor with extensive international experience in neuroscience, his primary role will be to coordinate the fund's research team and oversee the progress of approximately fifteen research projects currently underway or about to commence.

Professor Cali expressed his motivation for the role, stating, "From my first visit, I was deeply impressed by the project orientation, which seeks above all to translate research into concrete applications for treating neurodegenerative diseases." He highlighted the opportunity to "do science differently"—maintaining scientific rigor while being consistently guided by patient and societal impact. He credited this to the high scientific and technological level achieved by the Clinatec Fund and the collaborative atmosphere among its researchers. He also noted that the proximity between Grenoble and Turin offers a chance to build a scientific collaboration axis to strengthen the fund's international presence.

In his new position, Professor Cali will work closely with Scientific Director Professor John Mitrofanis and collaborate with Medical Director Professor Jean-François Payen to supervise clinical trials. He will also maintain regular contact with International Scientific Advisor Professor Pierre Magistretti, with whom he previously worked at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia.

Laurent Hérault, Director of the Clinatec Fund, welcomed the appointment: "His international experience will bring new momentum to our research work. His rigor, high standards, and remarkable aptitude for collaborative work make him a valuable asset for our teams."

Professor Cali is a specialist in electron microscopy. He holds a degree in electronic engineering from Turin and earned his PhD in 2012 from EPFL and UNIL in Lausanne, Switzerland, where his research focused on the physiological role of glial cells in modulating synaptic transmission. He developed expertise in electron microscopy techniques during his first postdoctoral position. He later joined Professor Magistretti's team at KAUST, deepening his research on astrocytes using morphological approaches and 3D imaging. Since February 2020, he has been an associate professor of human anatomy in the neuroscience department at the University of Turin and a senior researcher at the Cavalieri Ottolenghi Neuroscience Institute (NICO). He is also the founder of Intravides, an Italian company developing an augmented reality solution for surgical training.

Le Pr Corrado Cali travaillera étroitement avec le Pr John Mitrofanis, notre Directeur Scientifique, et collaborera avec le Pr Jean-François Payen, Directeur Médical, pour superviser les essais cliniques. Il échangera régulièrement avec le Pr Pierre Magistretti, Conseiller Scientifique International du Fonds Clinatec, avec qui il a déjà travaillé au sein de l’université King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, en Arabie Saoudite.

Un spécialiste de la microscopie électronique

Après une licence en ingénierie électronique à Turin, Corrado Cali complète sa formation à l’EPFL et à l’UNIL, à Lausanne (Suisse), où il obtient son doctorat en 2012. Ses recherches portent alors sur le rôle physiologique des cellules gliales dans la modulation des transmissions synaptiques. Il découvre les techniques de microscopie électronique lors de son premier post-doctorat, avant de rejoindre les équipes du Pr Pierre Magistretti à l’université King Abdullah, en Arabie Saoudite. Il approfondit alors ses recherches sur les astrocytes, en utilisant des approches morphologiques et de l’imagerie 3D. En février 2020, il rejoint le département des neurosciences de l’Université de Turin, en Italie, dont il est aujourd’hui Professeur associé en anatomie humaine. En parallèle, il continue ses recherches en tant que chercheur senior à l’Institut des neurosciences Cavalieri Ottolenghi (NICO).

Le Pr Corrado Cali a également créé une entreprise en Italie, Intravides, qui développe une solution de réalité augmentée pour améliorer l’entraînement à la chirurgie.
