Airbus Defence and Space, Destinus, MBDA Deutschland, Safran Electronics & Defense and Thales have formed the Bliksem EXO consortium to develop a European exo-atmospheric interceptor designed to counter medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. The project aims to give Europe a sovereign missile-defense capability in a segment where the continent remains dependent on non-European systems.
The consortium’s work centers on the EKV, or Exo-atmospheric Kill Vehicle, with a first space test now being considered as early as 2027. That timeline signals an accelerated effort to move from concept to validation, as European defense groups seek to close a critical gap in high-end missile defense.
Bliksem EXO brings together five major European defense companies with complementary expertise across air and space systems, guidance, electronics and missile technologies. Airbus Defence and Space and MBDA Deutschland are expected to contribute core missile-defense and systems integration capabilities, while Safran Electronics & Defense and Thales bring key know-how in sensors, guidance and command-and-control electronics. Destinus adds its own aerospace and propulsion-related expertise to the effort.
The initiative reflects growing European concern over ballistic-missile threats and the need for an indigenous exo-atmospheric interceptor capable of engaging targets outside the atmosphere, where interception is technically more demanding but strategically essential against advanced ballistic missiles. If successful, the program could become a cornerstone of Europe’s future layered air and missile defense architecture.
