Lam Research plans to invest more than $3 billion over five years in its global laboratories, a move the U.S. semiconductor equipment maker says will expand its R&D capacity by more than 50% and cut chip development timelines for the AI ecosystem by up to 2.5x.
The company, which specializes in deposition and etching equipment for semiconductors, is positioning the spending as a major boost to its innovation infrastructure at a time when demand is rising for faster, more advanced chips. The initiative is designed to strengthen Lam Research’s research capabilities across its worldwide lab network and accelerate the pace at which new technologies can move from development to deployment.
By increasing laboratory capacity and shortening development cycles, Lam Research aims to support semiconductor makers working on next-generation chips for artificial intelligence applications, where speed, precision and process innovation are becoming increasingly critical.
