China has added 14 European Union companies to its export control list in direct retaliation for the EU’s 21st sanctions package against Russia, which targeted several Chinese firms suspected of supporting Moscow’s war effort.
Among the companies affected are three French firms: III-V Lab, Cavok UAS and InPACT. The move also includes Germany’s Rheinmetall, underscoring the widening spillover of the EU-Russia sanctions regime into EU-China trade relations.
The Chinese decision appears to be a tit-for-tat response aimed at firms linked, at least in Beijing’s view, to strategic or dual-use technologies. By placing these companies under export controls, China is effectively tightening restrictions on the transfer of goods and technologies to them, raising the risk of supply-chain disruptions for European industrial and defense-related players.
The measure highlights how sanctions on Russia are increasingly reverberating beyond the immediate conflict, pulling Chinese and European companies into a broader geopolitical confrontation.
