The Australian government wants to require social networks to offer users over 16 a feed limited to accounts they have explicitly chosen to follow. Framed as a protection measure, the initiative — called “My Feed, My Way” — would effectively challenge the core recommendation-driven model used by platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and Facebook.
At stake is the return of the social graph, meaning a feed built primarily from people and accounts a user has already selected, rather than algorithmic recommendations. The proposal would give users a more controlled, follow-based experience and reduce the dominance of recommendation systems that currently shape what people see on major platforms.
The move signals a broader regulatory push in Australia to curb the influence of algorithmic feeds, especially for younger users, and to re-center social networks around intentional connections rather than automated content discovery.
